P R E S S E - I N F O R M A T I O N

On 12 October 2019, the VALENTINY foundation opens their new extended premises in Remerschen, Luxembourg with the exhibition

Nach Norden, nach Norden!

... oder doch in den Süden?

presents recent works by German artist Annette Goessel. The artist has developed a concept specifically for the spaces at the VALENTINY foundation, including both large-format paintings and small poetic works on paper from the lava fields of Iceland.

On 18 August 2019, the first Icelandic glacier, Okjökull, will be laid to rest. A commemorative plaque will be placed on the summit bearing the inscription: “A letter to the future” together with a letter to future generations. From 1986 to the present day, this glacier has disappeared almost entirely. A geomagnetic reversal is underway, Iceland loses twelve million tons of ice per year. Will Iceland in 2200 be completely without ice? Will the North become the South?

Iceland and Berlin – a magical combination for Annette Goessel. The title of the exhibition is reflected in Annette Goessel's vita – born in Lübeck, she studied in Stuttgart and Vienna (University of Applied Arts), lived in Spain and now lives and works in Berlin. In recent years she has felt ever more drawn to Iceland.

Nach Norden nach Norden! To the North, to the North! The title of the exhibition refers to a group of works that had its beginnings a few years ago in Iceland. What happens to a Berlin painter who finds herself leaving the big city of Berlin to accept an invitation to paint in the wilderness? A departure from complexity! Is it an absurdity of the urban fugitive that they actually enjoy being “subjected” to the forces of nature? Nature dominates everything in Iceland – even massive rocks are at the mercy of continuous change. Walking over endless moss-covered empty volcanic stone fields and the question: Why is the empty landscape nowadays considered beautiful? Glorification of the wilderness – a relatively new notion. In former times it was the Arcadian fertile landscapes that were regarded as beautiful. Lucius Burckhardt's book Why is landscape beautiful? The Science of Strollology describes that rather beautifully. Perhaps it is only an over-saturated society that can find beauty in this extremely empty nature, which it tends to consume initially by car before going for a stroll. What a “beautiful” contradiction these things exist in. The idea came to create something small, delicate in these large empty spaces of the landscape, and to have the opportunity to stay in motion. A process lasting years began and a kind of archive of “lyrical excitement” began to emerge; this archive is continually added to.

It demonstrates, in a surprising way, the human condition in relation one another and to nature, and is intended to contribute to the discussion about freedom as well as providing an incentive for each and every individual to think and act.
